A duck? That’s the unenviable score attained by a batsman in an innings when he walks onto the scoring area with high hopes… only to be rapidly dismissed by the bowler. The umpire usually sticks his finger in the sky, signalling the batsman to get off the playing area… equally rapidly. The outcome… the scorers have not been put to work at all… well, apart from entering the batsman’s name onto the score sheet.

The sum total of it all… the batsman goes home with nothing to show for his efforts… not a single run to his name. In real cricket where two innings are played by each team the batsman can get two ducks… that is a total disaster! So much so that the unfortunate fellow may consider playing snooker as a pastime! 😉
